Wiener Festwochen also take place in real life – with 15 productions

On August 26th, De Keersmaeker starts a “compressed live version”.

It had already been canceled, this year’s edition of the Wiener Festwochen, which was programmed for May 15 to June 21. Instead, artistic director Christophe Slagmuylder gave small insights online into the program that could have been seen. Now it is clear that the festival weeks will still be a real experience this year: in a “compressed live version”, which will take place for one month from August 26 under the title “Festival Weeks 2020 reframed”.

Most of the premieres planned for 2020 have already been postponed to 2021, but some program items are now being brought forward: In the first days of the festival, for example, the renowned Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker will be a guest in the museum district with her interpretation of Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” be; William Forsythe amalgamated old and new works on September 9, 10 and 11 with “A Quiet Evening of Dance”. Marlene Monteiro Freitas will launch her new production “Mal – Embriaguez Divina” from September 3rd.

The theater program is bleak: in “Farm Fatale”, Philippe Quesne imagines a posthuman future with unemployed scarecrows; Boris Nikitin deals with his father’s death in “Attempt to Die”. Chilean Guillermo Calderon tells in “Dragon” about politically active artists. We also think of the annual regent, Beethoven: In “Bust Talk with Ludwig van Beethoven”, Thomas Geiger speaks with his bust on September 12th in front of the concert hall. A total of 15 productions can be seen, ticket sales start on July 27th. (APA / red.)
