Mayor Ludwig, City Councilor Hanke and organizers drew a positive balance after 47 days of ice skating fun in front of the town hall
Vienna (OTS) – A special season of the Viennese Ice Dream is coming to an end. In the second winter of the pandemic, the City of Vienna was once again able to create a safe range of exercise on Rathausplatz and inspire hundreds of thousands of visitors for the glittering fun in the open air.
With 9,500 square meters of ice, the Vienna Ice Dream was bigger than ever in its 27th season. The “SKY RINK” on the first floor alone was expanded this year to a gigantic 1,150 m2 and offered guests a completely new view of the impressive ice landscape in front of the town hall. A total of around 250,000 visitors* were welcomed to the Vienna Ice Dream over the 47 days of the event – that is 50,000 more than last season, when the Ice Dream was open for 66 days.
“Worldwide unique ice skating experience”
Mayor Michael Ludwig was very satisfied with the results of the season: “It’s great that the popular Vienna Ice Dream was able to offer its many visitors a unique ice skating experience in a safe setting this year. I am delighted that so many guests accepted the offer of the City of Vienna and were able to spend unforgettable hours ice skating on the Rathausplatz.”
City Councilor for Finance Peter Hanke added: “Once again, the organizer has shown flexibility and perseverance in a challenging situation. Because the Wiener Eistraum is a guarantee for memorable experiences in the heart of Vienna. A unique offer of exercise in winter, which is not only very popular with the Viennese, but also with tourists from Austria and all over the world.”
The stadt wien marketing gmbh was particularly pleased about the successful introduction of the revised ticket system, which for the first time enabled completely contactless access to the ice surfaces, which significantly reduced the queue times for visitors. “The change in tickets, but also the access management, were very well received by the guests,” the organizer stated.
Relaxed rules and fantastic weather
While last year strict corona protection measures, such as visitor restrictions or distance rules, had to be observed, this year the guests of the Wiener Eistraum could look forward to relaxed rules and quick access: Anyone who registers once and enters their 2G Having shown proof, he was able to move freely throughout the site without further checks and also take off his FFP2 mask on the ice rinks and in the catering trade.
The excellent ice skating weather did the rest: the Vienna Ice Dream had to be closed for a few hours only once due to a storm warning.
The youngest guests also had reason to be happy: In addition to the two freely accessible practice areas, which could be offered again after a year’s break, the free school campaign was also well used. Almost 25,000 children followed the invitation of the City of Vienna and, together with their school classes or after-school care groups, moved their gymnastics lesson to the Vienna Ice Dream free of charge.
The 28th Vienna Ice Dream is scheduled to take place from mid-January to early March 2023.
