Municipal energy supplier Wien Energie fully repaid the 1.4 billion euro emergency loan granted by Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) “in early December”, the office of city councilor for finance Peter announced on Sunday. Hanke (SPÖ). Hanke recorded a video statement in which he praised the “protective shield” and spoke of “good news”. On December 1 alone, Wien Energie announced that it had repaid 1.25 euros of the 1.4 billion euros.
Like other suppliers in Europe, Wien Energie had to deposit high guarantee deposits for the electricity and gas trade due to price jumps and has been unable to finance them from its own resources since the summer. Mayor Ludwig had therefore provided a total of 1.4 billion euros from the emergency authority since July. The liquidity bottleneck and the mayor’s emergency loans became public in late August, when even this €1.4 billion was running out. As a result, the federal government granted another 2 billion euros via the Federal Financing Agency (ÖBFA), but these have not been used so far because prices then fell again.
On December 2, a commission of inquiry into Wien Energie began its work at the Vienna City Hall. The commission will closely examine the processes related to the billions in support granted by the city and the federal government to the energy supplier. The application for the appointment came from the ÖVP and the FPÖ.
