Widow’s Son: Exploring the Power of Dreams and Doubts in Art and Life

The impulse to stage Widow’s son he has had for a long time. When V. Roziņš left school in the Ogre district to study at the French Lyceum in Riga, the godmother turned her head and said that his commitment as the son of a widow would not end. Vilis Pludonis’s poem Widow’s son for many, it is associated with a stereotype – that one does not dream too much, that one does not break one’s wings… “The poem also has a theme about a person who wants to fulfill his dreams in art or any other field, and doubts about himself and his abilities arise at the first failures.” the director.

The story is told without words on the stage in the Valmiera theater. How to bring the poetic space into the theater when we experience the story associatively, not only through the mind and the spoken text? For example, in the play, the conflict between mother and son is shown in movement and sung. Each viewer forms his own associations, how he had a conflict with his parents, how he wanted to prove his rightness to them. “We give an open platform for everyone to experience their own story,” says the director. Poetic performance Widow’s son will delve into the experience of a person’s very first relationship, exploring the metaphysical mother-child relationship, which is often the basis of life-long issues addressed in psychotherapy.

Even today, many young people go away to study in distant schools. “Success stories are highlighted, but failures are not talked about out loud. However, there are many of them – drugs, alcohol, suicides,” says V. Roziņš. Several key words are encoded in the play, but the director advises to pay attention to the word “doubt”, because it has a destructive power that can also break a person. “We invite you not to give up at the first failures, but to keep fighting, hold on to your dreams and believe in them. Dreams are the driving force, they are the energy of life.”

The show is built as canon. It is the story of our identity. Plūdons also dedicated a poem to Latvian mothers. In the performance, the Latvian code is included in the sounds of Jēkabs Nīmanis’s kokli, percussion, electronic music, Ilze Vītoliņa’s costumes are a reference to the folk dress. The creative team also includes playwright Ludmila Roziņa, scenographer Valters Kristbergs, lighting designer Jūlija Bondarenko, choreographer Kārlis Božs and voice improvisation consultant Dana Indāne-Surkiene. Starring – Inese Ramute and Kārlis Dzintars Zahovskis.
