Widespread Infection of Listeriosis Linked to Smoked Salmon Consumption in Norway

The four, three women and one man, were all infected in June this year. They have been hospitalized, but all are now healthy or on the road to recovery. FHI writes that on theirs websites.

All must have become ill after eating smoked salmon from the same producer.

The salmon from Troll Salmon was withdrawn from the shops when they found the bacteria. It has expired, and is therefore no longer for sale.

Troll Salmon urges those who have bought the product with lot number 216 and last consumption date 23.05.2023 in the freezer to throw it away.

Rare, but serious illness

– Listeriosis is a rare but serious disease that mainly affects people with weakened immune systems, the elderly with a weakened general condition and pregnant women, says senior adviser Heidi Lange at FHI.

According to FHI, most people can eat foods containing the bacteria without becoming seriously ill. Those who are exposed, such as the groups Lange mentions above, tolerate less of the bacteria.

If you become infected, you may get symptoms such as diarrhea and flu-like ailments. One can also get a serious illness such as blood poisoning or meningitis.

The disease is treated with antibiotics.

There are some food products that have a greater risk of listeriosis: smoked, raw and graven fish, soft ripening cheeses, unpasteurised milk and some types of cooked cold cuts and raw meat.

Good hygiene is important

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority has collaborated with FHI, the Veterinary Institute and the municipal supervisors to find the cause of the outbreak.
