The Regional Director of the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean, Ahmed Al-Mandhari, commented in an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia on the targeting of Al-Ahli Al-Maamdani Hospital in Gaza, as a result of which 500 people were killed or wounded.
Al-Mandhari said, “There is no longer any safe place in Gaza as a result of the hostilities.”
Video clips showed ambulances transporting the victims and injured to the Shifa Medical Complex, in addition to a fire breaking out as a result of the bombing.
Al-Mandhari defined the World Health Organization’s position on this incident in a number of points:
We condemn in the strongest terms the attack that targeted the hospital in northern Gaza last night, which claimed the lives of hundreds of patients, health workers and refugees, in this place, which is considered one of the few safe places in such circumstances, and also wounded a greater number of innocent civilians. This unprovoked attack is an aggression against all of humanity, and a violation of all applicable conventions, customs and laws. The victims are all sick, elderly, women and children, and many of them are civilians who fled the bombing sites in search of safe shelter.
About 500 were killed in an Israeli bombing that targeted Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza
The World Health Organization, as the leading health organization in the United Nations system, works tirelessly to serve the vulnerable, save lives and preserve health, and seeks to make the world a safer and more peaceful place. The organization calls on all international and professional leaders and all partners to work to put an end to what is happening, and to intervene immediately to protect civilians, patients, health workers and health facilities, and we need everyone’s efforts with us. Civilians are not targets, patients and caregivers are not targets, and health facilities are not targets and may never be targeted by hostilities.
Victims under the rubble
An Israeli bombing of Al-Ahly Baptist Hospital, east of Gaza City, caused at least 500 Palestinian deaths and injuries, while the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that hundreds of people are still under the rubble, which means that the toll from the bombing is likely to rise.
Abbas: I demand that Israel be held accountable and that our people be protected
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared three days of general mourning and flags were to be flown at half-mast for the martyrs of Baptist Hospital.
Arab and Western condemnations of the incident continued, as the UAE called on the international community to make efforts to reach an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of life and avoid further inflaming the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, while Egypt considered this deliberate bombing of civilian facilities and targets a serious violation. According to the provisions of international and humanitarian law, and to the most basic values of humanity, as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “The news received is disastrous, as well as terrible and unacceptable.”
