Wide shot, Cuperlo (PD): “The right is dividing up the country, we have to get people out of their homes again”

A party that goes back to “getting people out of their homes”, a “coherent” coalition, the idea of ”alternative committees” to be put in place to “avoid that alternative is reduced to a sum of acronyms”. The path to the left to take in these months, for Gianni Cuperlo it is the same both on a national level and in Liguria, shaken by the investigation into Giovanni Toti’s center-right, where the Democratic MP will be tomorrow (at 5:30 pm at the Circolo Castelletto in Genoa, with him Max Morales) for a public meeting with the members of the Genoese party. “The judges must take care of the investigations,” he thinks, “it is up to us to reiterate the political failure of the center-right and build the path towards the elections with credible forms and names.”

However, the Toti case is already being made into a political issue on the right. What do you think of the Northern League proposal to introduce immunity for local administrators, with which Salvini wants to make the Ligurian case a battle of positions (also) within the center-right?

“Rather than immunity, it is correct to speak of impunity, in the wake of that Alfano decree that provided for a similar rule for the Prime Minister in office and that the Constitutional Court deemed unconstitutional. The reality is that when faced with problems born from a precise conception of power and the exercise of government, once again we think of getting around the obstacle with solutions that are only intended to accentuate the distance of citizens from institutions.”

It is clear, however, the attempt to accelerate on certain issues. Above all, the attack on the judiciary.

“Let’s be clear, the issue of justice falls within the logic of exchange between the forces of the majority: the premiership to Meloni, autonomy to Salvini, justice reform to Forza Italia. It is another form of division of the country carried out without addressing the real ills of the system. To stay in context, let’s think about the prisons chapter. 64 inmates took their own lives in the first seven months of the year, the last a few hours ago in Biella, 6 suicides among prison officers. Tonight (yesterday, ed.) we will vote on the prisons decree with confidence in the Chamber and not even a shadow of additional resources. As with other issues, responsibility continues to be placed on those who came before, but how long can this alibi last two years after the government took office? Even on justice, the king is naked.”

How can we defuse this mechanism from the left?

“If we think about the Ligurian affair, our opinion on the system of power that has dominated the Region in the last nine years has been clear since long before Toti was arrested or resigned. As is right, the judges will deal with the judicial affair. We have a different task, to equip the coalition that will run in the Regionals with a credible program and candidacy capable of regaining the trust of a majority of Ligurian citizens”.

Where are we at?

«It seems to me that on how to structure the alliance and on what proposal to advance there is a basic clarity and a collaborative spirit on the part of many forces even from different worlds, from politics to civics to important parts of a more aware society, including those productive sectors that in recent years have been penalized by the system of power that has come under accusation».

In all this there is a theme of building the field, and perhaps even before that the party. What to do?

“In the last two years the dominant narrative has been that of a united right and a divided center-left. The Democratic Party has managed to overturn this pattern, today it is clear that the right is deeply divided. The vote on the European presidency was the emblem, it had never happened that the three forces of the majority voted in three different ways, with all the consequences in terms of isolation and distrust towards our country system. In our camp I think the awareness has matured once and for all that by separating we can only help our adversaries”.

But who should be in this wide or very wide field?

“The “broad field” formula has not brought luck, but the substance remains. And the 24 percent obtained in the European elections burdens the PD with a specific responsibility, Elly Schlein said it well: we must be the most inclusive and united in the awareness that without the PD there is no alternative to the right, but alone we are not enough. This is why, on our part, we need to get people involved again, a broader population, and work immediately on a government project capable of responding to the material needs of that very large segment of the population that is doing badly today. We need to do it with coherence. To stay in Liguria, avoiding that in the coalition those who at the regional level run against Toti, and in Genoa support the center-right government, side with each other”.

How important is the issue of the choice of candidates, in the relationship between the dem and M5s? In these hours the meetings between the two parties continue, at stake are the local votes of the future.

“We know Andrea Orlando’s experience and authority, and we know he is willing to commit himself personally. In January in Sardinia we chose Alessandra Todde with conviction without asking ourselves whether or not she was a member of the M5s. She was the strongest candidate, we supported her and she won.”

But how can we involve the people behind the candidate and the symbols of the Democratic Party and the other parties?

“We need to speak a language of truth about the failures of this right. Talk to people to get them out of their homes and make them feel part of a project. I think that the committees for the alternative can be a valuable tool, if we want to avoid reducing ourselves to a sum of acronyms.”

Could the mobilization for the autonomy referendum be a first springboard for this?

“The fact that over half a million signatures have arrived in ten days proves that many are understanding the risks the country is facing. Now it’s a matter of transforming that wave of indignation into a real grassroots mobilization. If there is a referendum, reaching the quorum will not be easy, but we can do it.”

Will the autumn regional elections also be an opportunity to weaken the government?

“I don’t believe in an automatic connection between the outcome of that vote and the government’s stability, even if it is clear that positive results in regions currently led by the center-right would certify a crisis that would be impossible to deny. After that, the government will take care of harming itself. In Europe it is isolated and even overtaken on the right by Meloni’s allies, in the country they are incapable of providing answers on the subject of salaries, healthcare, work. There is a shortage of 31 thousand doctors and they are dividing up the reforms”.

Are Salvini’s polemics or Mollicone’s (serious) outbursts about Bologna also attempts to hide reality?

“Salvini must be understood about the Olympics, it’s summer and he’s suffering. Mollicone’s words are of unprecedented gravity, instead, it’s not just a question of institutional rift, but the confirmation of a never severed bond between exponents of this majority and the matrix of Italian neo-fascism. I don’t think there are putschists or mass murderers in the government, but I believe that at the top of some institutions today there are figures who have never broken the relationship with neo-fascism. And this is a serious problem for our democracy”.
