Between 25,000 and 50,000 people have been affected by errors by the UWV benefits agency when calculating the WIA benefits you will receive if you become unable to work. It takes months for clarity to materialize. And mistakes were also made with other benefits, according to research commissioned by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment.

Mistakes are already known to have been made in calculating the WIA benefit. How many people have been deleted, just not yet. The shapes of the group become clear. At least 25,000 cases where things went wrong, and maybe even 50,000, according to the research done.

The UWV has an action plan to further investigate the extent of the damage to the group of victims in the WIA file. The research will take months, because the group is very large. To illustrate: in the period studied, from 2020 to 2024, approximately 200,000 people received such a benefit.

Compensation

It is expected that the ‘first group of people’ will only be told from the second quarter onwards whether they have received too much or too little. Anyone who got too little will still get that money. And, importantly, this will have no effect on your tax return. In any case: the UWV will do its best to prevent ‘unintended revenue effects’. To do this, we collaborate with chain partners, such as Tax Authorities.

This is a lot of money, between a few tens to hundreds of euros per month, the UWV reports. So this can be very expensive for the government. Suppose it applies to 50 euros per month over a period of four years for 25,000 victims, then the compensation will cost 60 million euros.

In about half of the cases, too much was paid out, according to Minister Eddy van Hijum (Social Affairs and Employment, NSC). Anyone who received too much may not have to pay it back. In any case, the benefit will be reduced.

WIA revised

“We are doing everything we can to resolve this as quickly as possible and to reach a recovery process that will bring justice to their situation,” he promises.

He wants to look further into how the benefit can be simplified. That will take years. The UWV does not even have enough staff to do the recovery work.

Also with unemployment and sickness benefits

It doesn’t stop there. The research presented today also shows that mistakes have been made when calculating the benefits you get if you become unemployed (WW) or sick (Sickness Benefits Act ).
