Buying a new iPhone now requires a lot of money. For a more advanced version you pay more than a thousand euros, and for a ‘cheap’ device you also take a euro or six hundred from the wallet. You probably choose your iPhone carefully. But also pay attention to the timing. This saves you money, while sometimes you get a better iPhone in return. But when is the best time to buy a new iPhone?
Recurring pattern
To know this, it is important to look at the way Apple sells and discounts the iPhones. Apple sticks to certain traditions – which means that we can already predict the perfect time to buy a new iPhone this year.
Every year, the second week of September (often on Tuesdays) is when Apple introduces new iPhones. This year, Apple is doing that probably in October. The brand new iPhones can almost always be pre-ordered the Friday after the keynote, after which they are delivered or in the shops a week later. And while Apple announces the iPhones with a lot of bravado, the tech giant silently comes a day later with something else interesting: hefty price cuts for older devices.
In the first week of September 2020, the iPhone will cost € 859, just like immediately after the launch, while a week later you will get a better iPhone for the same money. Or the same iPhone, but considerably discounted.
Another iPhone
It is usually best to get an iPhone in the period after the September keynote, although Apple conjured up a surprise from the top hat in April this year: a new one appeared for the first time in four years. iPhone SE. This is an affordable iPhone, which is a combination of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 11.
On the outside, it looks exactly like the dated iPhone 8, but the interior is just as fresh as that of the new one iPhone 11. The device costs € 489. If you do not want the latest of the newest, go for the new SE. With this device we do not expect any price reductions after the keynote, so get this device at home.
When to buy an iPhone?
By the way, it doesn’t hurt much to buy a new iPhone now. The phones are known for being supported by Apple for an incredibly long time – often about five years. Especially with an iPhone XS or newer, you get an excellent iPhone that you can use for years to come. But as long as your iPhone is still working fine and has not been lost or stolen, it is really better to postpone the purchase until October, when the latest iPhones are in the shops. This is the perfect day to strike.
Cheap iPhone
If you want a cheap iPhone and don’t care about the modern looks or the latest gadgets, the iPhone SE is your phone. You can buy it now, because there will be no price reductions this year. The iPhone SE was presented in April 2020. The exterior of the iPhone looks dated, but the SE has the A13 chip in it: the fastest smartphone processor there is. Furthermore, the iPhone is wirelessly chargeable and you can unlock it with the trusted Touch ID.
iPhone 11 (Pro)
If you’re looking for a great deal on one of last year’s iPhone 11 models, wait until the Apple event in October. This is when Apple introduces its latest flagships; an exact date is not yet known. A day after the announcement, older iPhones with price cuts are in the Apple Store, including possibly the iPhone 11.
Latest of the newest
Do you want the latest, very best model? Wait for the iPhone event in October. The following Friday you can take the iPhone 12 Pro pre-order. As long as your iPhone is still working fine and has not been lost or stolen, we would postpone the purchase until this day. The iPhone will be delivered to your home one week after pre-order.
Which iPhones are on sale?
At the moment, the iPhone SE, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro (Max) are for sale in the Apple Store. The devices that do not disappear will receive a substantial discount after the September keynote. This does not apply to the iPhone SE, because it is only a few months old. Whether the iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro (Max) will soon be available is unclear. With the XR, the chance is small and with the 11 models the chance is real. If Apple no longer offers them itself, you can still look around at providers, who still have a stock left. The devices are therefore looking for a lot in price in the autumn.
What is the discount?
History shows that it pays to wait. When the latest iPhone is announced, the price of the older models usually goes down by $ 120 or $ 150. If the iPhone 11 models are still available in the Apple Store, we expect approximately the following prices after September 8:
