Why Yandex Market is Responsible for Delivering Counterfeit AirPods 3: A Customer’s Experience

Hi all! In this short note I am talking about a situation that happened to me just the other day and has not yet been resolved.

Background…

The search for a New Year’s gift in the form of AirPods 3 for a loved one led me to Yandex Market – a platform where I have already made orders several times and have never encountered any difficulties before. Moreover, less than a month ago I was able to buy a new Apple Watch Series 9 there at a very attractive price – lower than in the USA! The watch was sold by a random seller, but the watch arrived on time and was completely original.

That is why I had no concerns when ordering AirPods 3 on this site.

What’s happened

I chose headphones that were suitable for the price – not the most expensive and far from the cheapest of those presented. I placed an order and a week later came to pick them up from the company’s pick-up point along with other orders.

Other orders were not of particular value, but I decided to film the unpacking of the headphones right at the delivery point – the employee at the delivery point acted as a witness to this process. I unpacked the parcel, turned the box in front of the camera and headed home satisfied. But already at home, upon careful inspection, I noticed many discrepancies in the appearance of the box with the boxes from the original AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro 2.

Namely:

• blurry print on the front

• the headphones on the front part are pressed into cardboard 2 times stronger than the originals

• seal stickers are applied crookedly and cover most of the text on the box

• the seal stickers themselves are approximately one and a half times larger than the originals, and the image of the arrow in the green circle is blurry

• the box is glued sloppily and, unlike the original, the folds of the paper are visible

• the font of the inscription on the side is as crooked and oblique as possible: the dot above the letter i is generally square!

• the Apple logo is embossed into cardboard and greatly flattened

Could Apple afford to print its own logo like this? The question is rhetorical.

In general, after examining the box, it became obvious: they had delivered a fake. Moreover, it is of very, very cheap quality, judging by how crooked and slanting the box is. There was no desire or need to open the goods. And in the reviews for this product I found several more reviews from people who bought headphones from the same seller: they all also received a fake.

I immediately started writing and calling support asking to understand the situation and suggest further actions. You can rightly note: what is there to learn, what tips do you need? Bring the fake for return and order from another seller! That’s all true, however…

What do I think I should do now and why Yandex is responsible

Yandex has settled well, acting as an aggregator and platform, almost without selling any goods directly to the buyer. A very convenient position: my hut is on the edge, I don’t know anything! All complaints to the seller!

However, I believe that the site is obliged to check sellers in such situations. If the product card indicates that the product is original, then be kind – make sure that buyers who trust your site and the description of the goods receive what they order. Moreover, you monitor the descriptions on the product cards and they undergo your moderation.

Delivered a fake? Be kind, impose sanctions on the seller: fine him, ban him from selling goods, I don’t know what else, but do at least something! And help the client return the goods and receive compensation. After all, the order was placed through your platform and it was indicated that the product was original! Otherwise, what kind of trust can we talk about in you, as a site? If you are so indifferent to your own clients.

I’m generally silent about how the support for this site works – in 4 days of contacting them they did not help at all. From the word absolutely. No matter how detailed the description of the situation on my part was and no matter how much I asked that the situation be studied carefully and that template answers not be sent, the answers were still template and the same: we will check this store, expect an answer in 2 days. I write the next day and again the answer is the same. And again wait 2 days. And so every day.

Once again my position is short: the platform should not absolve itself of all obligations and, in case of problems, should help clients, and not disown them.

I will be glad to hear your opinion in the comments. What would you do in such a situation: would you immediately return the counterfeit or continue to seek an adequate response from the site representatives and an individual consideration of your situation? I will also be glad to hear your similar situations and how they were resolved. For now, I keep the sealed fake and still hope to receive a sane answer from Yandex.
