Having a wound that doesn’t heal can really interfere with activities, especially if the wound still causes pain. Therefore, Mother needs to know the causes and how to treat it.
An open wound is an injury that involves external or internal damage to body tissues, usually involving the skin.
Nearly everyone will experience an open wound at some point in their life. Most open wounds are minor and can be treated at home. However, even though the wound has received treatment, some wounds have a long healing time, you know.
3 Factors causing wounds
There are certain things that can hinder Mother’s healing time. Check out the following list.
1. Age
“The older a person is, the lower the ability to heal the tissues on their skin,” said dr. Ugi Sugiri, Sp.Em, Association of Indonesian Emergency Doctors (PERDAMSI), at the event Press Conference #Don’t stop Preparing for Homecoming with Betadine.
Even though age is just a number, it still affects everyone’s body performance. As you get older, it becomes more difficult to move because your bones and muscles start to weaken.
Age affects every aspect of life, including the body’s ability to heal wounds. Things were processed more slowly, and wounds needed more time to progress through the healing stages.
2. Infection
If you have a wound, you should immediately treat it in the right way until it is clean and healed. Otherwise, it will cause an infection that can worsen the skin condition.
“Infection not only hinders the wound healing process, but can also cause tissue damage to increase the size of the wound itself,” he said.
3. Decreased availability of oxygen and nutrients
Those who do not get balanced nutrition from the food or drink they consume can also affect the healing time of wounds on the skin, Mother.
“Decreased availability of oxygen and nutrients to heal wounds,” said Ugi.
How to treat open wounds so they heal quickly
Some wounds can be treated at home with various stages of healing. Here are some steps you need to take to treat the wound.
1. Clean the wound
When you first notice that a wound has appeared on your skin, you need to immediately clean it with water until it’s clean. Avoid delaying this step because it can cause infection and worsen skin conditions.
“Clean the wound because an open wound must have a lot of dust and dirt. That’s what we have to clean up,” suggested Ugi.
Not only that, Ugi also advised Mother to use plain water when rinsing the wound.
2. Give an antiseptic
So that the wound is free from bacteria, germs, and dirt, you can apply an antiseptic to the wound after cleaning it.
“Suspecting there are microbes or germs, then we give antiseptic,” he said.
3. Prevent friction with clothes
Wounds that rub against clothing tend to actually hinder the healing process because it can make the wound worse. Therefore, Ugi advised Mother to use thin gauze to provide a boundary between the skin and clothes.
4. Routinely change dressings
Mothers need to change bandages or gauze at least once a day or whenever they see wet or dirty bandages.
Disinfect and dry the wound before reapplying a clean adhesive bandage or cloth. Remember to keep the wound dry while it is healing.
So, those are some things you need to know to heal wounds on the skin that won’t heal. Hopefully useful, yes, Mother.
