It’s not fair: if you work longer before you retire, you’ll also die earlier, so you can enjoy your pension twice as short.
An amendment to the pension law in Spain enabled researchers to track how long they lived after retirement on a very large group of retirees. The people who worked longer died earlier.
The researcher told Die Zeit: “We were able to show that people who work longer live shorter lives. Those who do not retire but work have a 4.2 percentage point higher risk of death for each additional year of work between the ages of 60 and 69. .”
