When conducting experiments on the Hadza people in Tanzania, a surprising fact was noticed. Despite running several kilometers a day, they did not burn more calories than people in the Western world.
The results have been confirmed by investigations of other strains. Surprisingly, this also seems to apply to other species. Captive chimpanzees—an apt analogy for our own condition—burn just as much as their wild cousins. The cause of our time’s obesity epidemic cannot therefore be solely our sedentary lifestyle. Rather than reduced consumption, it has to do with increased intake. The diet is the culprit in the drama, in short.
