There is no denying that the computer Apple 1 triggered revolutions in the history of technology, as it was the first product officially released by Apple. However, there is one detail that calls the attention of those who follow everything about the brand: it is very common to find this computer with a wooden frame.
But do you know why? Let’s explain it to you right now so you can embark on a part of the history of Steve Jobs’ company.
Why was the Apple computer made of wood?
To begin with, the equipment developed by engineer Steve Wozniak was available only as a circuit board, without any kind of protection. The company’s original idea was to offer the computer’s components, as a kit, so that technology enthusiasts could assemble it.
However, Steve Jobs managed to sell 50 units of the computer already assembled for the Byte Shop, an electronics store located in California. It was at that moment that the set of electronic components was accommodated in a Koa wood structure, totaling six copies.
Today, even fewer samples of these wooden Apple computers remain.
Despite not having a specific explanation that justifies the choice of wood as a material, it is possible that the intention was to add value to the product. After all, Koa wood is pretty rare, only growing in very specific regions.
In recent years, some Apple 1 units with a wooden structure have been auctioned in the United States. As expected, the sale value of these products increased considerably in relation to the original price, reaching figures that reached US$ 800,000 in certain transactions.
According to information updated in August 2022, there are still 62 Apple 1 units worldwide, of which 41 belong to the first wave produced by Wozniak.
However, it is estimated that there are approximately 20 more units that are not in the records. Did you know about this one?
