President Russia Vladimir Putin and President China Xi Jinping said he would not attend the COP26 Summit in person. This decision is unfortunate, considering that both countries contribute large carbon emissions to the world.
Previously, the Kremlin stated that Putin would not attend COP26 in person.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: “Unfortunately Putin will not be flying to Glasgow”. AFP. Nevertheless, climate change is one of Russia’s foreign policy priorities.
Peskov also said that the Russian side would still be present at COP26.
Russia itself is the fourth largest emitter of carbon in the world. Critics say the country is still not doing enough to tackle the climate problem.
Meanwhile, Putin said his country is aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
In addition, Xi Jinping is reportedly not going to attend COP26 in person. This information was conveyed by the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.
“It’s now pretty clear that Xi will not be coming (to COP26) and the Prime Minister (Boris Johnson) has been notified beforehand,” said one of the sources in The Times. Reuters.
“What we don’t know now is what attitude China will take.”
Xi himself has not left China since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Reportedly, Xi will follow COP26 via video link. China is said to be represented by Deputy Environment Minister Zhao Yingmin and Climate Envoy Xie Zhenhua.
China is a country with the largest greenhouse gas emissions in the world, quoted from the World Research Institute (WRI).
