“The transfer of several units of this equipment (F-16 – ed.) will not give the desired effect … For example, 2-3 squadrons of F-16s (more than 30 aircraft – ed.) today would significantly affect the course of hostilities – this would changed the situation at the front,” the Defense Ministry said.
We add that in Ukraine the squadron consists of 12 aircraft, but in other states their number may be more.
First, Ukraine needs to adapt the infrastructure for the F-16, and pilots and engineers must be trained with Western aviation. After that, aviation units will be able to enter Ukraine.
In addition, fighters will need to be dispersed across operational airfields in order to quickly respond to changes in the air in different directions.
“Accordingly, pairs or units of fighters will be on duty in the northern, southern, eastern directions and in the center of the country, quickly taking off to intercept air targets, or responding to threats that come from outside the territory of Ukraine,” the Defense Ministry added.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defense stated that Ukraine hopes to receive 40-50 F-16 fighters from the allies, which will allow the formation of three to four squadrons to protect the Ukrainian sky.
Recall that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte agreed to work on creating a coalition to purchase F-16s for Ukraine.
In addition, Belgium announced the possibility of teaching Ukrainians to fly F-16 fighters, but the country will not provide the aircraft themselves.
