Why TP Vision Stops Hue Integration with Ambilight Philips TVs: The Impact and Possible Motivations

TP Vision stops Hue integration with its Ambilight Philips TVs. This made it possible to give Hue lamps the same function as the Ambilight LED strips behind televisions. It is not known why the function is no longer integrated in new Philips TVs.

Philips blogger Toengel came this week out with the news and a spokesperson for the television division of Philips confirmed it to Hue Blog. Indeed, the Ambilight-equipped 77OLED808/12 does not have Hue integration, or at least it is not mentioned on the product page. That is still the case with any other recent Ambilight model well the case.

Toengel does not mention a reason for the change, he wonders aloud why Philips would do this and condemns the move. Hue Blog does receive confirmation, but no further explanation. That site sees as a potential motivation that the Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box can be sold more as a result. The same effect is achieved with this device of 250 euros. On Samsung TVs it is also possible with an app of 130 euros.

The Hue Blog also sees the fact that Hue lamps and Philips TVs are made by different companies as a potential stumbling block, although it never seems to have been until now. The Dutch company TP Vision makes Philips TVs under license and the Dutch company Signify has the license to market Philips Hue products.

In this video, the floor lamps and the ceiling spotlights work together with the television.
