Why Tomato, Cucumber, and Watermelon Prices are So High: Findings from Ministry of Agriculture Report

It became clear why the prices of tomatoes, cucumbers and watermelons are so high this year.

In the latest report by experts of the Ministry of Agriculture on the production of vegetables in the country, it is reported that with a smaller size of harvested areas to date, in some cases combined with a decrease in average yields per hectare, for now the production of the main vegetables, watermelons and melons from open areas is from 35.1% (cucumbers) to 65.6% (watermelons) less on an annual basis. A slight increase (by 0.8%) marks only the production of strawberries and currently amounts to 5,834 tons.

With regard to the greenhouse production of tomatoes and cucumbers, for the period from the beginning of 2023 until now, a decrease of 19.9% and 29% is reported, respectively, compared to a year earlier, writes “Sinor.bg”.
