Why this Kangaroo Rugby League Jersey is sold in Rebel stores across Australia – except Westfield Bondi Junction

The Rebels have resumed selling the Kangaroo jersey – the same one worn by crazed knifeman Joel Cauchi during his shopping center rampage in April – but will not stock the jumper at their Westfield Bondi Junction store.

The retailer stopped selling kangaroo clothing. In the wake of the massacre, uniforms and other merchandise can now be purchased online and in all stores except Bondi Junction.

Rebel did not want to comment on the decision, but Daily Mail Australia understands staff at Bondi Junction have strongly advised headquarters not to resume selling jumpers in stores.

A source familiar with the discussions said: ‘They tested the team’s temperature and were very adamant. ‘Don’t do it,’ he said.

The source said wearing a kangaroo jumper in an eastern suburbs shopping center ‘would still be seen as quite provocative’.

There has been no call as to whether or when the Rebels will be donning jerseys again at Westfield Bondi Junction.

Before Rebel confirmed the suspension, the general manager of Classic Sportswear, which manufactures the Kangaroos kit, said he was not aware of any stockists removing the jerseys from their shelves.

“No retailer has ever notified us that they have stopped selling the Kangaroo range,” Michael McDonald told Daily Mail Australia in early May.

Mr McDonald said the last time the company supplied Kangaroo products to retailers was ahead of the international games in October.

“The new 2024 Kangaroo range is expected to hit retailers by the end of this year, around September,” he said.

‘Where there are retailers who do not display kangaroo products for sale, it is likely because they do not currently have them in stock.’

NRL sources were also unaware that the retailer had stopped selling Kangaroo gear.

The jerseys remained available at nrlshop.com and other retailers, including Peter Wynn’s Score in Parramatta, while the Rebel paused sales.

Rebel was founded in Bankstown, south-west Sydney, in 1985 and describes itself as ‘Australia’s leading sports retailer offering the widest range and best global brands’.

It is owned by Super Retail Group, which includes BCF, Macpac and Supercheap Auto.
