In the world of cars, motorcycles and trucks, there are engines with any number of cylinders from 1 to 6, but immediately after that the arithmetic jumps over the number 7 to 8-cylinder engines, today more V6, but in the past and inline . Sure, the 9-cylinder ones are still missing, for example, but it’s curious why there are 3- and even 5-cylinder engines, but not 7.
Well, Mike Fernie, the protagonist of a YouTube channel, decided to provide detailed explanations for all car enthusiasts, so that they also understand the reason why we don’t have 7-cylinder engines in the world.
However, before explaining everything, we must remember that there are also 7-cylinder, 9- and 11-cylinder marine engines, all of which are positioned in line. But there we are talking about huge engines, almost the size of a house, and other calculations are applied in their design.
So, the main reason comes from balancing and a much too complex math that would be necessary for the 7-cylinder formula. In a 4-stroke engine, the crankshaft makes two revolutions until the same cylinder generates a new combustion action, so 720 degrees. With 4-cylinder engines, it’s simple, a combustion takes place every 180 degrees of crankshaft rotation. Even with 5 cylinders, the balancing math is advantageous, and with 6 cylinders it is absolutely perfect, without the need for counterbalancing.
At 7 cylinders, however, the sequences start to have complicated numbers, on the one hand, and all the perfect balance from 6 cylinders is destroyed on the other hand. So it is, if you want more cylinders, it makes more sense to go straight to 8, possibly V-shaped, and you have good balance again. For 7s, things are too complex, with no benefit to justify the effort.
Theoretically, however, a 7-cylinder engine can exist and be balanced. It’s just that no one in the automotive world considered it as one that would justify the complexity and effort.
