One of those developments is that the F-35 stealth fighter jet made by Lokcheed Martin became the first fifth-generation aircraft capable of carrying out a nuclear strike.

On September 21, 2021, two US Air Force F-35A fighter jets were fitted with a mock version of the B61-12 nuclear gravity bomb for a final test flight as part of the fighter jet’s full weapons system demonstration.
“These tests have now seen the F-35A Lightning II evolve from the operationally representative F-35A to the most representative B61-12 test asset,” the US Air Force said in a statement.
The stealth fighter was engaged in a drill to take down the non-warheaded B61-12 Joint Test Assemblies (JTA).
Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Jackson, head of the Strategic Deterrence and Nuclear Integration division at Air Combat Command Headquarters (ACC), said: “Adding ‘nuclear capability’ to the 5th generation fighter that has brought some conventional level capabilities to the table has added high-level implications. strategic for this jet”.
To pass the nuclear certification process, the F-35A jet must undergo two stages. After completing the first test on the aircraft for initial nuclear certification, the fighter jet needs to conduct a graduation flight test exercise to pass the nuclear design certification.
The data obtained from these tests were then evaluated by the Department of Defense and Department of Energy to check whether the F-35A and JTA’s B61-12 bombs performed their roles correctly during the two tests.
