The New York Mets surprised this week by releasing Gary Sánchez, after having included him in the major league roster to replace the injured Tomás Nido.
The Dominican mask had barely consumed 6 shifts with a connected hit, but the New York management preferred to let him go. There are a few reasons for this move.
Francisco Álvarez is one of the main prospects for the New York Mets and he already hits balls that confirm how well he was talked about. The Venezuelan receiver will receive more playing time with Nido’s injury and that could compromise Sánchez’s continuity with the New York team. The rookie has 6 home runs, 13 RBIs and a .261 batting average this season.
It is no secret to anyone that Sánchez has big defensive problems, although he does have a great arm. Right now the Mets need a backup catcher with defensive characteristics and the Dominican doesn’t seem to fit into that equation. In addition, he has already been released by other teams this year, such as the San Francisco Giants.
“It feels good to be back in New York after all those years with the Yankees. It’s a different team, but it’s the same city,” Sanchez told SNY through an interpreter. However, he may not have had that connection to the Mets fans because of his past with the other team in town. It seems that the team’s decision was premature, but this could have had an influence.
