Why the European Parliament and Hamburg District Assembly Elections Matter: Ensuring Recognition, Respect, and Security for All

The elections to the European Parliament and the Hamburg district assemblies will take place on June 9, 2024. The latter may seem too unimportant to us and Brussels and Strasbourg too “far away”, but it is true: it doesn’t matter who represents us in the parliaments! Neither in the European Parliament nor in the seven districts of Hamburg.

The European Parliament decides on the political framework for many issues. Be it consumer rights, climate protection or our working conditions, for example via the EU Minimum Wage Directive.

The 357 district representatives in Hamburg play a key role in shaping our everyday environment in the district, for example taking care of child and youth welfare issues and promoting the district’s culture.

Parliaments have a concrete influence on our working and living conditions. This can only be good if inhumane positions and racism don’t play a role there.

We all want recognition, respect, safe work, decent wages and
Security for us and our families – regardless of our origin, skin color, religion or worldview. That’s why we at ver.di make no distinction as to who we fight for. An employee is an employee, a trade unionist is a trade unionist, a person is a person. We stand in solidarity against hatred and exclusion, because change for the better can only be achieved with respect for one another.

ver.di Hamburg is offering a series of information events before the elections, which we have summarized on this page. A lot is still being planned – feel free to check back from time to time.
