According to the Bavarian-wide three-stage plan of the Ministry of Culture, it has been possible for a few days to wear mouth and nose protection in the city and district of Würzburg, where the infection rate is now well below the first signal value of 35 new infections in seven days per 100,000 inhabitants from the fifth grade onwards in class. But Johann Löw, the head of the Würzburg health department, does not recommend that. Out of sheer caution, as he says. And also so as not to endanger classroom teaching. The mask requirement in secondary schools was therefore extended until October 9th.

When asked by this editorial team, city hall spokesman Christian Weiß explains that “there is no mask requirement for staff if reliable protection against infection is guaranteed through transparent or other suitable protective walls”. In the citizens’ office there are transparent walls between customers and employees. Ultimately, this is comparable to retail, where salespeople do not have to wear a mask behind such protective walls. The Bavarian Infection Protection Measures Ordinance would allow that, said Weiß.
“At the same time, this ensures better verbal and non-verbal communication during counseling, especially with regard to hearing-impaired people. Wearing additional mouth and nose protection would limit communication,” said the press spokesman for the city of Würzburg. But whoever insists that employees wear mouth and nose protection during the conversation can demand this. “Purely objectively, the employees in the well-ventilated offices work more persistently and take fewer breaks, which enables them to process a total of up to 1500 cases per week in the citizens’ office.”
