You make a number of assumptions that I think are incorrect in this market segment. At first you think they are going to sell the old product for a while, that would be true if this was a 4060, but not about the market which is exclusive to people who want the buy the best of the best. If they could choose between 5080 or 4080, even if the 4080 was hundreds of euros cheaper, they wouldn’t do that and they would still buy the much newer and better product. In any case, the demand for these cards will drop to zero now, but certainly in the coming months. The potential buyer in this category is waiting for the successor and is not going to upgrade to a model that is about to become obsolete.
Your second point is that they want to continue selling the product, again the 60 and maybe even 70 series segment will actually sell for a while and even new SKUs come out on it that priority, but that will not be there. New 4080 or 4090 anymore, there is no market for that anymore so it would be weird if Nvidia stocked those chips, what are you going to do with them, try to push into the data center market? There too, they prefer a map based on the latest architecture.
This does not mean they will force you to move from the 50 series, your 40 series will still work fine and be supported, so you can continue to use it. But there will be plenty of switches in this market, so if you really want to buy a cheap 4080 or 4090, it’s best to keep an eye on the V&A or Marktplaats in January.
