Hervé Degée, a specialist in new construction techniques to withstand earthquakes, points out the know-how: “Taiwan has a very good research center with the best engineers, specifically focused on earthquakes. They also have the opportunity to conduct experiments and simulate earthquakes.”
“For example, they know that reinforced concrete is dangerous in earthquake zones, but they still found a way to build with concrete,” he says. “You have to assume that there will be damage anyway, but you have to be able to limit it and foresee where it will be so as not to have serious consequences for the stability of the building.”
