Why the Arheilger Mühlchen is a special pool

Lake, meadow, happiness: the little mill has its very own charm.

A pretty lake, a green meadow, a bit of patina: The Arheilger Mühlchen in Darmstadt doesn’t need much to be a perfect outdoor pool.

VThere is nothing special here, but this bathing lake is something special: the Arheilger Mühlchen, in the tranquil Darmstadt suburb of Arheilgen. Green lawn for sunbathing, tall, old trees all around, a paddling pool with an awning for the little ones, a red water slide, a small kiosk: that’s it. And yet this lake has its very own charm – and also its very own patina.

In 1924 the mill, named after a mill that used to be near the bathing lake, was opened. In 2012 the end threatened. The lease that the city of Darmstadt had concluded with the owner of the property expired. In the city, which was plagued by financial worries, a discussion began as to whether the operation of the bathing establishment could be saved – after all, there is a second fantastic lake in Darmstadt with the Woog in the middle of the city.
