Why Swiss companies are expanding their cyber protection

With a survey in the DACH region, Sophos sheds light on the reasons for expanding cyber protection in companies. Compared to its German-speaking neighbors, Switzerland is more sensitive to cyber threats.

Sophos has published the results of its survey on cyber protection in companies in the DACH region. As part of this study, Sophos surveyed 201 C-level managers from retail, services and manufacturing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

In general, Swiss companies are more sensitive to cyber threats than their German-speaking competitors. 36 percent of the Swiss companies surveyed say that possible economic damage is a reason for their increased investment in cybersecurity. In Germany, 23.4 percent and in Austria, 24 percent said this. Economic damage is therefore the main reason for the increased cybersecurity investments in all three countries.

The second most common reason is also the same in all three countries. The increasing threat of ransomware and other attack vectors is the reason for increased IT security spending for 28 percent of the Swiss companies surveyed.

Another key motivation is digital transformation within the company, which was mentioned by 20 percent of respondents in Switzerland. In both points, Swiss managers are ahead of decision-makers from Germany and Austria in percentage terms.

State-initiated cyber attacks are at the bottom of the list of reasons given. While just 2.5 percent of respondents from Germany and 2 percent of respondents from Switzerland cited state actors as the reason, no one in Austria gave this reason.

On average, 10 percent of companies did not invest in more cybersecurity. In Switzerland, this figure was 6 percent.

According to an analysis by Check Point, cyber attacks are increasing in the DACH region. How many attacks there were in the second quarter of 2024 and where and how badly Switzerland is affected, read here.
