Why Sterilizing Your Rabbit is Important: Health Benefits and Behavioral Changes Explained by Veterinarian Zane Briģe

The owner of the rabbit, Diana, decided to go to the vet to find out why her Latte suddenly became hyperactive and started to run around the cage.

The owner admitted that although the description of the breed guarantees the calm nature of the animal, the rabbit surprised her with its hyperactivity.

Behavioral changes in a rabbit can be related to sex. Rabbits reach this quite early – at the age of 4-6 months. Although the rabbit is the only pet without a companion, veterinarians recommend castration in these cases as well. It turns out that performing such an operation can prolong the rabbit’s life.

Veterinarian Zane Briģe explained: “One of the reasons why it is necessary to sterilize so that there are no unwanted children, but the second reason is that the behavior does not change, because when they reach sexual intercourse, they may start marking the territory, trying to jump over the owner’s leg, for example.”

Also, of course, it is also about the animal’s health, because pyometra, which is the accumulation of pus in the uterus, is quite common in female rabbits, as well as ovarian and uterine tumors, adenocarcinomas, cysts in the ovaries are also found. Therefore, this procedure helps the rabbit to prolong its life.

Like all owners, Diana is worried about the operation itself and the recovery afterwards. An interesting fact – people, dogs, and cats must always refrain from eating before surgery. But it turns out that this does not apply to the rabbit. On the contrary –

rabbits should not be starved because they have a very sensitive digestive system that must work continuously.

The digestive system of rabbits is so specific that most health and even behavioral problems can be prevented with proper feeding. Stress also greatly affects the life of a rabbit.

Brigë explained about the recovery: “The operation is not too complicated, but for a female rabbit, of course, you have to take into account that it is a bit more difficult than for a boy, because the abdomen has to be opened again and the ovaries and uterus have to be taken out.”

The main indicator of recovery is that the animal begins to eat.

“If it is seen that the rabbit refuses food at all – well, it will be a few hours – but it also depends on what the problem is, because, for example, if the stomach rots, it is a very acute fault that can lead to death if not provided help,” said the specialist.

After surgery, active behavior may persist for a month or even two if it is related to hormones, but perhaps the animal is simply very active and likes to run around.

On the other hand, when talking about indoor plants, the owner of Latte, Diana, has a question – what happens if orchids or other greens are eaten. Brige explained that orchids wouldn’t be the worst, although it varies from plant to plant, but most dracaena, for example, can be poisonous.

But how do you know that the rabbit is sick and his health is in danger?

The specialist explained: “He can be very apathetic, he can sit in one place, he can have diarrhea. Usually the first thing is that the rabbit does not eat, he is apathetic, he does not move, he does not run anywhere, he crouches in one place.”

It is important to entrust the treatment to your veterinarian in such cases.
