A question for the St.Paulians. Why are you making your stadium available to Ottensen this year when it’s against a factory club and there was such a fuss last year when Ottensen wanted to play there against RBL? There are different dimensions… St.Pauli has always been quite open about it.
Interesting fun fact, both RBL and Leverkusen won 8-0 against Ottensen.
You can’t even remotely compare Leverkusen and Bayer with Leipzig and RB.
Leverkusen was founded 120 years ago at the request of 170 employees of the Bayer Group as the “Gymnastics and Games Club 1904 of the Farbenfabrik formerly Friedrich Bayer Co. Leverkusen”. A real “maloching club”, which is what clubs like Schalke like to boast about.
Leverkusen already played in the first class in 1951 and was also represented in the highest German league (Oberliga West) in the year the Bundesliga was founded (1963), but they were not taken into account for the Bundesliga. The club was relevant in terms of football long before Bayer really invested a lot of money and before they could even make any real money in the “football” business.
Both the city and the club are deeply rooted in the Bayer factory.
On the other hand, with Red Bull you have a global corporation that looked around for any representative in German professional football and ultimately decided on Leipzig. There are actually no parallels at all except that both of them ignore the 50+1 rule. Some official, others unofficial.
Sorry, we didn’t have the chance to create a similar bond with a group in Leipzig for 45 years… the VEBs were then wound up
Bayer 04 is of course real football, a real club…by tradition, where all members can make a lot of decisions and make a difference every year. Fans are still real fans, not the kind of event people at RB with zero connection to the club and the city. Maybe RB will be there in 110 years, if their tradition isn’t 110 years short.
Don’t know why you have to say such a would-be sarcastic thing now. Personally, I don’t necessarily have anything against RB in the Bundesliga, but when I read something silly like that…
The Bayer Group founded both the city of Leverkusen and the Bayer 04 club. He is the mother of the city and the club and has promoted sport far beyond football for over 100 years. Long before you could make money with it. The city of Leipzig will never be able to have this connection to Red Bull. This is a group from Salzburg that has nothing to do with Leipzig and only sees sport as marketing.
I don’t care which club has the “hottest” or “realest” fans, I don’t need to worry about that. There are also real fans and smaller “event” fans at my local national league team. As far as I’m concerned, you can have 45,000 elephants sitting in your stadium, that doesn’t make the club any worse.
Nevertheless, it is simply a fact that RB Leipzig was founded as a construct because a company wanted to be present in German professional football. Then we looked for any club and after many rejections we got a license in Leipzig. This makes it the only Bundesliga club that was not actually founded out of love for the sport. I don’t care whether you want to call it a lack of tradition or something else, but it’s just a fact.
I am pleased for the city of Leipzig and the surrounding area that they have a strong local team that plays great football and has also brought the Champions League to the region. Nevertheless, you don’t need to pretend that RB is a club like any other.
I didn’t do that at all, to portray RBL like any other BuLi club. I just asked provocatively what the difference is for the St.Paulian. So far, only people from Leverkusen and two HSV fans have explained this to me, who said that their stadium was booked for a concert.
But it’s probably because RBL wasn’t founded out of love for sport. That could be a plausible reason.
I find the attitude in Germany to be a bit narrow-minded and conservative. But the majority (or the loudest?) decide where the journey goes. Neither of us will have much influence on that.
And YES, RBL is not a club like any other and that’s why I’m interested in it. But I also generally have an open, liberal attitude.
In Leipzig I see fans, children and players who identify very much with the club. You can discuss the origin story, but the origin story is sometimes accidental and does not determine the quality of affection or who is allowed to belong to the illustrious circle and who is not. As long as you comply with the statutes, everything else is just interpretation of the different points of view of all fans. Apparently all of us who write here are football fans. That’s what unites us
If St.Pauli were consistent, they would behave similarly in similar cases. Especially since I’m surprised that the more left-wing, open audience at RBL is being thwarted by a left-wing club. But maybe that didn’t fit the image after all.
