Referee Tony Harrington issued a “circular” red card to Wolverhampton player Joao Gomez after his violent intervention on a Brentford player, in the match that was held last Friday in the third round of the FA Cup.
The shape of the expulsion card, which was announced by the match referee in the ninth minute, raised many questions on social media, as the common colored cards are “rectangular.”
The newspaper “Marca” published a detailed article about the “circular” shape of the red card.
This shape of red cards is used to help players who have a problem distinguishing colors (color blindness) to know the referee’s decision, the rectangular card is “yellow” and the circular card is “red”.
A number of footballers have previously admitted, such as former Sevilla player Thomas Delaney, that their color blindness leads to their confusion on the field and their inability to distinguish between their teammates when they look down while running with the ball.
“It’s difficult to describe what’s happening, it’s like seeing different shades of the same color,” the Danish player told radio station DR P3 in 2018.
He explained: “When people are close you can distinguish them well, but when the distance is far it is difficult.”
There is another reason that was mentioned in the newspapers’ interpretation of the shape of the red card, which is that it helps the referees make the decision accurately and distinguish the card before extracting it from the pocket. The rectangular card is “yellow” and the circular card is “red.”
And one year ago, in January 2023, during the match between Wrexham and Sheffield United in the FA Cup, referee Dean Whitestone also showed a round red card to Daniel Gibson.
It is worth noting that Uriah Rennie was the first referee to use this red card in a Premier League match in 1997.
