Why some electric cars are superior to others – Car news – Car – TVNET

Fast charging has opened up new possibilities

The biggest advantage in the interior of the new generation of electric cars is the flat floor. The electric motor is usually mounted at the rear, so the front axle is pushed forward as much as possible. This allows you to significantly increase the cabin. In this respect, electric models are clearly superior to internal combustion machines and hybrids. Among mid-size family cars, Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Audi Q4 e-tron stand out with interior capacity. They are all created on specialized platforms.

The new generation platforms also stand out with modern charging solutions. Tesla cars have traditionally been unbeatable with charging power of up to 250 kW, but the modern 800-volt systems of Audi, Porsche, Kia and Hyundai have already changed that. For example, the battery of the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes.

“Modern technologies make it possible to obtain enough energy for 100 kilometers in two minutes. However, using devices up to 500 amps for charging creates an additional load on the battery and reduces the number of charging cycles. Therefore, it is important to find an optimal balance between charging speed and battery longevity,” explains Jons Vanags.

He predicts that much attention will be paid to hydrogen technology in the future. Kaunas University of Technology researchers are also working diligently on them. The wheels of fuel cell cars are also driven by electric motors, but the main energy carrier is hydrogen stored in special tanks. In an electrochemical generator, hydrogen combines with air and electricity is produced, which is fed to the motor through the battery.

“The natural resources used for the production of batteries are limited or undiscovered, but the production of green hydrogen using electrolysis is an inexhaustible source,” adds Jon Vanags.
