‘Some idols cease to be idols’: Alan Badoev commented on the position of Sofia Rotaru and suggested why she is silent
After the full-scale Russian invasion, many Ukrainians expected condemnation of the aggressor’s actions from the Ukrainian pop legend Sofia Rotaru, but this never came. The singer from time to time appears online with laconic and sometimes even wordless reactions to Russian terrorist attacks in the cities of Ukraine, but so far her position can be described as silent. The famous Ukrainian music video director and producer Alan Badoev, who worked a lot with the People’s Artist, suggested why this is happening. He honestly admitted that Rotaru ceased to be his idol because of her position.
Badoev expressed the opinion that the singer was unable to move into a new era, so mentally she still remains in the past. He shared his thoughts on this matter in interview Dmitry Gordon.
The music video maker emphasized that he does not condemn Sofia Mikhailovna, but her songs, in particular about Ukraine, have ceased to carry for him the meaning that they once carried.
“There probably won’t be any statements from her anymore. Some idols cease to be idols for you. Not because you judge who I am and what right I have to condemn Sofia Mikhailovna Rotaru. But I won’t allow myself to be guided by her actions either. And more whether I will hear this music with admiration? A little of the magic and power in it has been lost. Because any time in which we live, it shades everything that happens at that time. Thus, Sofia Mikhailovna remained in that era. She does not has moved into a new era and will not pass again,” commented Badoev.
According to the producer, Rotaru is one of those people whose essence is half Russian. Badoev emphasized that he himself had worked for many years in the Russian market and with Russian artists, but after February 24 he changed radically and began working for the victory of Ukraine. Sofia Mikhailovna failed to do this.
“There are a lot of people like that. For them, 50% of the very essence is Russia. Therefore, you either uproot it and say, “I am here, rely on me, I will do everything in this war for my country.” Or you think differently.” , added the music video director.
