New Delhi. The country’s Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Friday suggested that lawyers should adopt a more technologically friendly approach instead of relying only on traditional modes of communication. He made the request after the lawyer pressed him to list a case. He said, ‘Why are you all so unfriendly towards technology? Send an email to the registrar listing and I will look through and list them. Sometimes I don’t have lunch, but pay attention to emails.
In fact, a lawyer appearing in the Supreme Court pressed for immediate listing of a case despite it not being in the mentioned list. To this, CJI Chandrachud said that he could have sent an email to the registrar for listing the matter. The Chief Justice also questioned why lawyers appeared reluctant to adopt technology.
Supporter of CJI Advance Technology
Chief Justice Chandrachud has long been an advocate of leveraging technology to streamline court procedures. During a speech last May, he emphasized that judges must embrace technology for the benefit of litigants and not burden litigants because judges are uncomfortable with technology.
Train yourself again..
At that time, the CJI urged the High Courts to continue using technology enabled hybrid hearings, stating that such facilities are not only for use during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said, ‘In one of my judgments which I was editing last night, I have said that we cannot burden our lawyers because of our restlessness with technology. The answer is simple, train yourself again. The Supreme Court registry has gone completely paperless after Justice DY Chandrachud took over as the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
