Why skate legend Tony Hawk continues to inspire generations: “He’s just an icon” | skateboarding

Tony Hawk is considered one of the most successful and influential pioneers in vertical skateboarding. He is now 54, but he hasn’t lost any of his appeal yet.

“He’s just an icon. How he’s always stayed down to earth even though he’s the greatest skateboarder,” said a young fan from the crowd.

“Everyone knows Tony Hawk. If you walk down the street and ask someone what skateboarding is, they know who Tony Hawk is.”

“He’s just the best skateboarder there’s ever been. I like to watch his videos. I look at the position of his feet first and then I try to copy him.”

“He made skating great and still skates,” said one lady from the audience. “I think this is fantastic.”

“This is a once in a lifetime for us. We even interrupted our vacation early”

After 20 years Tony Hawk was once again in our country. He didn’t skate last night, but he did talk to his fans.

“At a certain point you see that your son is watching YouTube videos about Tony Hawk, then you get such a déjà-vu feeling. That’s fantastic,” says a fan from the audience, who skates together with his son has come to Antwerp.

“This is once in a lifetime for us. We even interrupted our vacation early from the Vosges.”

“I love him for his crazy stunts like the 900 and the loop of dead,” said another young fan from the audience. “Nothing is impossible for him.”
