Why should those with cancer of eggs and gelatin not get the yellow fever vaccine?

The Ministry of Health said that people with special conditions do not need the yellow fever vaccine.

For example, someone with an egg allergy and hypersensitivity to gelatin… but why?

As explained by the epidemiologist from the National University (UNA), Juan José Romero, it is the result of how the vaccine is produced.

“The yellow fever vaccine is produced from a live virus that is reduced (weakened), and when it is produced there are several sections through embryonated eggs,” he explained.

“In addition, there are some components in its formulation such as antibiotics or stabilizers that include gelatin,” said Romero.

So, finally, going through these components can cause a serious allergic reaction in a person. However, it appears that the data indicates that it can occur in 1 in 250,000 people.

“Although it is very rare for someone to have a serious reaction, if a person is allergic to egg protein, gelatin or certain antibiotics, it is very good to let the vaccinator know and the doctor to see if he recommends the vaccine ,” Romero said.

Necessary

On January 11, 2025, a new reform will come into effect that will update the risk areas for the spread of yellow fever.

This means that a vaccination against this disease is required for travelers from some American countries, such as Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, as well as African countries.

Ministerial resolution No. DM-CB-3109-2018 makes the requirement. Health defends that the measure is not new, “but it has been established since 2007 and since then reforms and updates have been presented regarding the areas that are considered at risk of transmitting the disease.”

A few days ago, it was reported that the updated measure came into effect on December 27, but the ministry said on Wednesday that it would be on January 11. The guidelines have a transition period of three months, starting from the publication in La Gaceta.

In the press release published, Salud reported that Costa Ricans who do not have the vaccine will not be able to board planes to those destination countries that have the dose requirement, established by Costa Rica.

Foreigners from these countries without that protection would not be allowed to enter the country.

Examples of vaccines

On the other hand, the ministry specified that people with certain medical conditions do not need the yellow fever vaccine. The following are exempt from this requirement:

  • Children under 9 months
  • People with severe egg allergy
  • People with diseases that affect the immune system (immunosuppression)
  • Patients who have or have had thymus disease

In addition, there are some relative contraindications, although they do not automatically exempt people, requiring a medical evaluation to determine whether they should receive the vaccine. These are:

  • Adults 60 years or older
  • pregnant women
  • Breastfeeding women
  • People with hypersensitivity to gelatin
  • People infected with HIV asymptomatically, with adequate immune function

Although many travelers must comply with this requirement, the regulations also make it clear that in the special cases mentioned, the vaccine will not be required.

However, those passengers must have a medical certificate that explains their condition. Otherwise, they will not be able to board a plane or enter the country.

On the other hand, for those who travel to countries considered at risk, the vaccine is mandatory and must be purchased in private pharmacies, as it is not included in the scheme national vaccination.

After receiving the vaccine, the person must process their card at the appropriate Health Management Department Directorate.
