Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Prime Minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) say Arab Saudi wants nuclear as does its neighbor and archenemy, Iran.
This statement was revealed during an interview with MbS Fox News discussed the issue of normalization with Israel.
“If they [Iran] get it, we have to get it,” said MbS.
Apart from that, why does Saudi want to have nuclear?
MbS said Saudi needed to get nuclear for security reasons and to balance power in the Middle East.
So far only Israel is said to have nuclear power, while Iran continues to develop its nuclear program and enrich uranium to 83.7 percent.
Even though he wants these weapons, Prince MbS warned about the dangers of nuclear weapons.
“Even if Iran has nuclear weapons, [jika] there are countries that use nuclear weapons. “That means they are at war with another country,” he said.
Furthermore, MbS said that the world could no longer see other Hiroshimas.
“If the world sees 100 thousand people dead, that means you are at war with the whole world,” said MbS.
Saudi’s desire to have nuclear power has actually been around for a long time. According to a Washington Institute report, MbS said the Saudis wanted three main things in return for normalization with Israel. Israel’s normalization efforts with Muslim-majority countries were assisted by the United States through the Abraham Accord.
These rewards include guarantees of United States security, access to the best American military equipment and technology, and support for the domestic civil nuclear program.
The Washington Institute considers the third “Demand” to be perhaps the most challenging for the US, because it includes access to uranium enrichment technology that could be used to produce nuclear explosives.
