Former Rockstar Games animator explains why it takes so long for the studio’s games to be released to non-game consoles.
Last week, the first trailer for “Grand Theft Auto VI” was released, which quickly broke viewing records online and met with enthusiastic reactions. However, the trailer caused disappointment among PC gamers as it became clear that “Grand Theft Auto VI” will only be released for Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2025.
Historically, the game’s developer Rockstar Games has usually released its games for PC over a year after the initial launch. Now the Youtuber tells York Reactswho previously worked as an animator for Rockstar Games and, among other things, worked on “Grand Theft Auto V”, which is why it takes so long for big games, such as Rockstar’s own titles, to be released for PC.
One of the main reasons is that the developers simply want the game to be as good as possible when it is released and contain as few technical bugs as possible. As a result, the developer must also prioritize working on the version of the game that they expect will sell best, which is the console versions.
For a game developer, it is also significantly easier to optimize a game for game consoles because all Playstation 5 consoles use the same hardware, which also applies to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
When a developer is to release a game for PC, it instead needs to manage a significantly larger amount of hardware combinations in terms of processors and graphics cards, for example. This increased variety also means that the risk of things going wrong increases, meaning more time and resources are needed to fix these before the game is released. Since there is limited time and resources, not least for a game as big as “Grand Theft Auto”, the developer therefore needs to set priorities.
