New York A police officer rearranges warning cones in Manhattan’s gloomy Port Authority bus terminal as a red bus approaches. It heads to a separate bus platform a few meters away from travelers going from here to the airport or to other cities.
On the bus it says “Operated by Transportes Latinos”. About two dozen people leave, mostly young men. They have nothing with them except the clothes they wear. At the entrance, volunteers from humanitarian organizations greet people and distribute water and masks.
For months, buses carrying asylum seekers have been arriving every day in the Port Authority, mostly from Central and South America. Many of these are Abbott buses, named after Greg Abbott. The Republican governor of Texas wants to set a political example.
