Giessen philosophy professor Elif Özmen conducts research on the subject of academic freedom. In an interview, she explains why she does not issue any “trigger warnings” in her seminars and what tendencies at universities cause her concern.

Elif Özmen, born in 1974, studied philosophy, the history of science and German philology in Göttingen and Frankfurt. After completing her doctorate at the Humboldt University in Berlin and her habilitation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, she held visiting professorships in Hamburg and Regensburg. In 2013 she became a professor in Regensburg, and since 2016 she has been teaching practical philosophy at the University of Giessen. In 2021 she published the anthology “Academic Freedom in Conflict”.

Ms. Özmen, how free do you feel as a scientist at the University of Giessen?

As a scientist among scientists, I feel very free. I am not aware of any cases of interference with academic freedom in Gießen that would have had a wide impact. On the other hand, it is now part of everyday life at every university to consider security strategies for certain public events, because one has to reckon with the fact that they can be disrupted, that there may be attempts to discredit, boycott or hijack them.
