If during these days you have attended any of the District vaccination points to receive doses of vaccine against COVID-19, you may have noticed that the Pfizer biological is no longer labeled with this name and now it is called Comirnaty, so next, we will explain to you what this change is due to.

Why is the Pfizer vaccine now called Comirnaty?
Comirnaty is the new commercial name of the vaccine produced by the American pharmaceutical company Pfizerafter the FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration Agency), will approve this biological as safe for its distribution and application against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease.
According to the pharmacist, the vaccine Comirnaty It is still the same, formerly known as Pfizer, and it has the same component against the virus (called messenger mRNA), which acts by preparing the body to defend itself against COVID-19.
Portal Bogota consulted with Dr. Andrea Ramírez Varela, an epidemiologist and public health expert at the Universidad de los Andes, about this name change and the reason why the biological center is now called Comirnaty, and explained that Before these products gain FDA approval, they are known by the name of the pharmaceutical company that created them. that is to say that Pfizer corresponds to the name of the pharmaceutical company and Comirnaty is the commercial name of this vaccine.
In this way, Dr. Ramírez makes it clear that if any citizen is offered the application of the Comirnaty vaccine, this should not be a cause for concern or to think that it is not safe against the effects of the virus, since it is the same Pfizer, only now it has a new commercial name, as heard in the following audio:
Is Comirnaty safe against COVID-19?
Yes. The vaccine that is now marketed as Comirnaty and that is developed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, was approved by the FDA as a safe biological for the prevention of COVID-19, in addition, it is authorized for emergency use by the World Health Organization. Health (WHO), since it is 95% effective against asymptomatic COVID-19 infection.
Regarding the protection of Comirnaty against COVID-19 variants, according to studies by the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) of the WHO, the vaccine is effective against variants of the virus such as the current omicron.

Can the names of the other COVID-19 vaccines change?
Considering that before any vaccine gets FDA approval, it is known by the name of the company that created it, the same can happen with all other vaccines, for example: companies that produce vaccines against COVID- 19 in the United States are called Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, so each pharmaceutical company, once approved by the FDA, will be able to label the biologicals with their trade name, as follows:
- Vaccine Comirnaty from the pharmacist Pfizer.
- Vaccine Spikevax from the pharmacist Modern.
- Vaccine Janssen of the pharmacist Johnson & Johnson.
Dr. Ramírez mentions this and other examples in the following audio:
