Why PC Games Still Don’t Have a Single Save Location in 2024

If you’ve ever tinkered with save files on your PC, then you’re probably aware that most popular PC games store save files in different places and don’t have a single save path. This causes a lot of trouble for many users who have to log into the network every time to check the location of the archive of each game. Recently, some players complained about this: It’s already 2024, and PC games still don’t have a single save location!

Currently, most game save files on PC can be found in one of the following folders:

  • C:User(username)Saved Games
  • C:User(username)AppdataLocal
  • C:User(username)AppdataLocalLow
  • C:User(username)AppdataRoaming
  • C:User(username)File

In some games, the file is saved either directly in a folder located in the game’s installation directory, or in a special folder provided by the game platform. And although many people now use cloud storage, sometimes they still have to manually manage local archive files. During this time, they have to rummage through a large number of folders, which is quite annoying.

Many players have noted that the “Appdata” folder should not be used to store game saves. This folder was originally created to store files that users do not need to manage manually. If the game developer sets the save path to this exact folder, this means that he does not really understand what we are talking about.

In fact, in the Windows system there is a special path for storing game saves – this is the “Saved Games” folder. However, many developers do not use it, including even in games from Microsoft itself.
