This was one of the titles on which I played CDs to pieces in my youth. HoMM 3 and 4 were the pearls, played for nights with my cousins via Hotseat, but then came part 5 (I think by Ubisoft??). Then everything had to be done in 3D and, as beautifully described above, light comic styles, etc.
When will these publishers learn that it’s not about gimmicks, 3Ds and the thousandth special effect. Just give us those old games with modern features (bigger maps, better stories, online options…)
I fell in love with that magical nostalgic music, those great imaginative graphics, when you saw a pot of gold with leprosy or a bunch of gems/crystals it was really like you were in that fantasy world .
And oh yes! That magical feeling when you can finally raise level 4 after so much grinding. Great!
