The breakup of Nightwork in 2013 came as a surprise to many. There has also been long speculation about the reasons for the end of a well-functioning project. Its founder, musician František Soukup, revealed what was behind it in the program 7 páds Honza Dědek.
“When we did our last show at the O2 arena, we co-produced it. And when I was going through the production budget, I asked him what the Other item meant. It was a tens of thousands item. And he said: Those are drugs. So I asked, who had it? And he: Everyone except you. And that’s how Nightwork ended, that was the final reckoning,” surprised Soukup with his statement about colleagues Jakub Prachař, Votěch Dyk and Jan Maxián.
In addition to the end of Nightwork, he also remembered its beginning. “I started the band with Emil Kopta, Václav Kopta’s nephew. But he said that he wasn’t going to play any more boozer funk and that he was quitting and was going to do some thrash metal – and he went to Britain to do something in the kitchen. And the only other guitarist that I he knew from the gymnasium for less talented children, he was Jakub Prachař. I met him on Národní třida and I approached him,” described Soukup, who was also a composer, lyricist, producer and keyboardist.
His father, music composer and producer Ondřej Soukup, helped him with the creation of the project, who supported his son in his work also for the reason of protecting him from addictive substances. “I was happy that the boy doesn’t take drugs, so to hell with school, especially when he’s composing,” he said, adding that he unsuccessfully marketed Nightwork’s first album to major labels. But because he believed in his son’s talent, he published it himself.
