/ world today news/ Chisinau is the next victim of the collective West after Kiev, the Russian Foreign Ministry assures. Over the past few months, the Moldovan authorities have taken a number of decisions aimed at breaking off relations with Moscow. Why is Maya Sandu’s regime ignoring Russian warnings?
Anti-Russian campaign
Moldova supported four of the EU’s six sanctions packages, nearly 1,800 individuals were banned from travel and financial transactions, and assets were frozen. Sandu submitted to parliament a draft national security strategy in which Moscow is the “biggest threat” and also demanded the withdrawal of military contingents from Transnistria. Russian media were banned.
The former president of Moldova, Igor Dodon, believes that Sandu is leading the country on the path of Ukraine. Communist MP Konstantin Starish emphasizes: Moldovan society, unlike the authorities, does not see Russia as an enemy. According to him, Chisinau needs a balanced, balanced foreign policy – good relations with both Moscow and the EU.
Former prime minister and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Vladimir Filat, believes that Sandu is driven by emotions. Her national security strategy does not clarify the future, but only records some moments of the past and present. And Moldova is threatened not by Russia, but by depopulation: people leave at the first opportunity.
Sandhu doesn’t listen to critics. She is passionate about Ukraine. In particular, on November 21, the so-called Day of Dignity and Freedom, she arrived in Kyiv to discuss regional security and EU accession with Zelensky. A week later, the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, visited Chisinau. He thanked the Moldovan people for their help in the fight against Russia, pointing out that Ukraine and Moldova should join the EU because they have always been part of European civilization.
Second in line
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is convinced that Moldova is doomed to become the West’s next victim in the hybrid war against Moscow. More specifically, they are now working on the “5+2” format for the Transnistrian settlement, in which, in addition to the direct participants in the conflict, Russia, Ukraine, the OSCE, the European Union and the United States participated.
The press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Maria Zakharova, noted: “After the Baltic states and Ukraine, official Chisinau took a course towards artificial de-Russification.” This will destroy another country under the guise of democratic reforms, she believes.
Moscow described Chisinau’s accession to the sanctions as “another hostile step”. The West seeks a complete break in relations between Moldova and Russia, Zakharova pointed out. She explained the increase in anti-Russian rhetoric with Sandu’s attempts to justify himself to Brussels for the lost local elections.
Against this background, “Rosselhoznadzor” renewed the ban on the import of plant products from a number of regions of Moldova – due to the unfavorable phytosanitary situation, the department specifies. Inspectors constantly find problems in vegetables and fruits that can cause multibillion-dollar damages to Russian agriculture. Chisinau did not react in any way to this.
The secret of survival
“In the total import of Moldova in 2022, the share of Russia is 12.5%, for natural gas and fertilizers – 82.8 and 51.8%. For local suppliers of fruits and pharmaceutical products, our market is the most important, 36 .5 and 29.1% of exports, respectively,” commented Anastasia Prikladova, Associate Professor at the Department of International Business at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.
Sandu’s government made an anti-state decision by joining the anti-Russian sanctions, the expert continues. Moldova’s energy, agriculture and pharmaceutical industries will suffer from this. Russia won’t notice anything.
Moldovan political analyst Igor Tulyantsev also thinks so. “Sandu is conducting not an anti-Russian, but an anti-Moldovan policy. Everything that has been happening in the last few years cannot be called democratic transformations. We thought that good times would come, but it turned out that they have already passed,” he claimed .
Sandu is driven solely by personal political interests. It gains legitimacy in Western countries and it is more important for it what people say about it abroad than at home. “She thinks that the more she disputes with Russia, the more valuable she is to the EU and the US,” the expert emphasizes. “However, even there they gradually understand that Sandu’s regime is no different from its predecessors: the same corruption and discredit on the European course. It is true that this only encourages Sandu to quarrel even more with Moscow”, he adds.
The authorities have no alternative to the current strategy. No one thinks about the economic consequences or the military ones. Sandu expects that “abroad will help”, meanwhile, Moldova is getting closer to disaster.
