Why many Spaniards are Choosing Ireland for their Post-Brexit Move

June 13, 2023. 18:17

Brexit, a term used to refer to the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union, took place on January 31, 2020. The exit process began after British citizens voted to leave the European Union.

It was decided in a referendum on June 23, 2016. Although the official departure date was January 2020, an agreement was reached for a transition period to exist, which ended on December 31, 2020. That time was dedicated to negotiate what the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union would be like. From there, a good number of Spaniards went to live in Ireland. In the following lines we explain why.

Why can we say that Ireland takes the share of Spaniards after Brexit?

As you already know, after Brexit, the United Kingdom ceased to be part of the European Union, which implied significant changes in the free movement of people between the United Kingdom and the EU countries. One of the main ones was the introduction of stricter border controls between the United Kingdom and Ireland. The reason is that Ireland is a member of the EU and shares a land border with the British territory of Northern Ireland.

Many Spaniards aware of this fact began to carry out English courses in Ireland. Before I show you the reasons, let’s continue reviewing a bit what happened after Brexit.

After the Withdrawal Agreement of the United Kingdom from the EU, a Protocol was established between Ireland and Northern Ireland. The usual thing is that strict border controls are not applied for both goods and people crossing the border between the two countries.

Of course, since the United Kingdom is no longer a member of the EU, Spanish citizens wishing to reside and work in the UK do not benefit from the free movement of people as they did before Brexit.

What does what we have just discussed mean? That Spaniards who want to reside in the countries that make up the United Kingdom have to carry out certain procedures to be able to work or study.

Why did we choose Ireland?

Now it’s easier to understand why a good number of Spaniards have thought of Ireland to reside. It is a country that is still part of the EU. Therefore, citizens of other EU countries can still benefit from the free movement of people and work there without having to get any kind of permit.

It also influences that in this country English is spoken. If you master this language, Ireland will become a very attractive place to work. However, if you don’t, it’s also the perfect place to study the language.

I am sure that knowing all this information has been very useful for you. Now you have to decide if you will take the step. Will you also be one of those who takes advantage of all the possibilities to learn English and live in Ireland? Only you have the answer.
