Now Elon Musk represents the quintessence of the principle Fake it until you make it (“Fake it until it’s true!”), even more strongly than before – although just recently it seemed much more.
Originally, this American proverb was primarily related to the field of psychology, which states that if you act and feel like a successful person, this will help you achieve real success. In recent years, however, from a purely psychological point of view, this principle has been carried over to other areas – and there its luster has noticeably dimmed. First of all, this applies to business and in particular to the start-up economy.
To give birth to a certain business idea, inflate it with the help of PR to the status of a brilliant breakthrough in the future and attract huge funds from investors for this business – however, problems often arise with its implementation, as well as with financial returns. The number of noisily bursting “soap bubbles” has become obscenely large, and it is also good that the business “geniuses” who did not live up to the trust do not come to the attention of law enforcement authorities. The story of Theranos, which turned out to be a pure hoax on a planetary scale, and its creator Elizabeth Holmes, who went behind bars for ten years, serves as a case in point.
The number of predictions promising a similar outcome for Elon Musk has long been incalculable. For example, the other day we celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Hyperloop project, which turned out to be nothing. However, the entrepreneur has disappointed expectations every now and then, staying afloat and leaving critics empty-handed. Moreover, the latter are generally right: Musk is an adventurer and an incredible specialist in self-promotion, who, on the one hand, has an extraordinary gift for getting away, and on the other, excellent connections in the American establishment, which provides the most powerful state support for the most -his loud projects. In general, there were quite serious reasons for the diagnosis of “liar”, which was given to the businessman by many.
Now, however, Elon Musk is undergoing an incredible transformation: a brilliant but empty shell is filled with real and very extraordinary content. In a short time, the darling of liberal California became the enemy of all progressive humanity: he took his business to Republican Texas, turned the liberal-totalitarian “Twitter” into the outrageously censorship-free “X” (at the same time expelling a crowd of slackers from the company). and generally took a firm “side of evil” in America’s intensifying ideological and political confrontation.
It is precisely in this metamorphosis that the most interesting thing lies. Did the businessman understand what he was getting himself into when he came out against the left-liberal agenda? It is uncertain.
For most of his life, Elon Musk was a caresser of fate, around whom a real cult developed. Millions, tens or even hundreds of millions of people saw him as a genius, a guru, a visionary. Successes added good features to his public image, while failures slipped like water off a duck’s back. Coupled with initially strong self-esteem and self-confidence, such a combination can give rise to a full-fledged God complex in a person. And there is a suspicion that he is no stranger to Musk. It is enough to recall the scandalous incidents with his participation, such as that interview while smoking marijuana – as if the businessman was purposefully proving to himself and the world that he could get away with anything.
Who knows, maybe Musk’s movement was originally the same – the extravagance of an eccentric billionaire, confident in his guiding star and at the same time with impunity, and got involved in another adventure according to the usual principle “Kukuriga even if there is no doubt”. And he went to speak the truth, despite the fact that in doing so he defied the deep state that raised him and the liberal establishment that made him a global idol.
However, this time everything turned out to be much more serious – it sounds a little strange for a person who has been running a huge business for decades, but it is true. It turned out that the “privatization” of NASA’s resources and development for SpaceX, the long years of standing in the pipeline for government subsidies and the attraction of billions of dollars of private investment for dubious projects are mere trifles compared to taking the “wrong” side in an intra-U.S. divisiveness and speaking out against the “Washington Swamp” .
And now an unpleasant reality is increasingly knocking at Musk’s door. White House Blocks SpaceX Grants for Rural Internet Development The company is also being investigated for discrimination (for refusing to hire illegal immigrants) and Neuralink is being investigated for violating animal rights. The Securities and Exchange Commission continues to try to sue Musk over the Twitter purchase. Tesla also has a whole host of problems, from subsidy cuts to an investigation into possible misuse of funds.
It’s all deep state revenge on the entrepreneur for being on the “wrong side of history.” However, Musk persevered – and now the future of both his business and himself largely depends on the outcome of the presidential election.
The adventurer, who made his name and fortune through a combination of behind-the-scenes games with the state and powerful self-promotion, has made a choice that now forces him to fill the shiny shell with real substance. The scoundrel, whose business and life is largely built on the principle of “fake it till it’s true!”, is faced with a challenge that requires him to actually make things true.
And it looks like Musk intends to follow that path all the way. We want to wish him well.
