Tensions between Kylian Mbappé and the French Football Federation (FFF). The champion of Bondy (Seine-Saint-Denis) indicated in a press release sent toAFP Monday 19 September 2022 having “decided not to take part in the planned photo shoot” on Tuesday 20 September with the French team after the refusal of the FFF to “modify the agreement” on the image rights of the players.
Dispute over image rights
It is not the first time that the number 10 of France has made such a decision. In March 2022 he had already refused to participate in a photo shoot with partners of the Blues, he recalls The Parisian.
At the center of the controversy: collective agreement on image rights, which leaves the FFF sponsors the opportunity to use the images of international players. Kylian Mbappé had stated that he particularly wanted to have it a right of inspection.
During various meetings, Mbappé’s advisers, in particular his lawyer, Delphine Verheydenhad been able to the top management of the FFF “to express their position regarding the need to modify the agreement governing the conditions of use of its image”, continues the press release, and a deal it appeared to have been found in early June.
“A new version of the convention” was to be completed before the start of the next World Cup on November 20, Mbappé advisers indicated in a statement, “to be in tune with the evolution of sport and communication methods”.
“faithful to its positions”
However, this Monday, September 19, the president of the FFF, Noel Le Graethe said inside The group that “nothing will change between now and the World Cup”.
The star of the Blues “and his representatives (…) deeply regret that no agreement can, as requested, be found upstream of the World Cup”, reads the statement. For this reason, “faithful to his position”, he will not participate in the Blues photo shoot scheduled for Tuesday.
This decision “obviously does not call into question his total commitment and determination to contribute to the collective success of the national team for major sporting events to come”, concludes the statement.
Requested byAFP, the FFF had not reacted by mid-afternoon. Noël Le Graët and François Vasseur, marketing director, are expected in the afternoon in Clairefontaine, where they will meet the players, having learned theAFP source close to the case.
