“Star Wars” fans are in a class of their own and are known to be extremely obsessed with every detail. Do you get corrected sometimes?
Oh yes, I would say something like “He and the live animator steered the droid” and they look at me as if I came from the moon and say, “You mean 21B”. They know a lot more than I do.
You couldn’t find work in Hollywood for a long time, but you were recognized everywhere. How was it?
Sometimes very bizarre. I was in an airport and people came up to me and said to their four year old kids: “Look, this is Luke Skywalker!” and held out the kids to me, who of course began to yell. I was 52 and even if they had seen the films, of course, they couldn’t make out the guy in front of them. They must have thought, man, he let himself go. I wasn’t the hero, I was the child scare.
You have played so many different roles in your life and you have really proven that you are a great performer. Does it hurt that you are only known for one?
Absolutely not! If someone says today that people will only remember you as Luke Skywalker, then I am happy! I never thought I would be remembered for anything, so this is a win / win for me. And I’m nothing but grateful.
