The Democrat is conducting a strictly controlled election campaign. Not everyone in her party likes the strategy.
When the spotlights come on for Kamala Harris on Thursday afternoon, she is visibly nervous. After weeks of acclaimed campaign appearances, funny online commercials, and the cinematic Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the presidential candidate has finally decided to give a television interview.
It is the first that the incumbent vice president has given in her young campaign. CNN anchor Dana Bash asked the questions, and Harris brought along her running mate, Tim Walz.
Bad experiences
Harris has a complicated relationship with journalists, and it’s evident these days. She prefers to avoid confrontations with media representatives, even when she’s traveling around the country on Air Force Two with a horde of correspondents reporting from the White House.
Media interest in Harris was already huge before Joe Biden withdrew from the Democratic presidential ticket. She was the first woman to take over the vice presidency, and a person of color at that. Journalists circled around her, and what they found was a politician who was not finding her new role easy to transition into.
